Eight-year-old Pelle, the son of an elderly laborer Lasse Karlsson,
moved with his father from Sweden to Denmark emigrant ship. Here he
lives on a peasant farm, an introduction to the complexities of the
surrounding world — to the bright and ugly, good and terrible, pathetic
and worthless. It goes through the attachment and the pain,
disappointment and love, learns at a local school for the poor and the
first lessons of social struggle in the hope one day to go and conquer
the alien world.
