Karel Kachyňa, one of the great Czech directors, created a lot of extremely impressive films, not only for the canvas, but also for the screen. In all his works we meet with a remarkable emotional and visual culture, with an understanding for great and small human affliction, with a kind humour. The highlights of the television drama without a doubt belongs to his film Golden eels, inspired by the stories of Ota Pavel, about a little boy, who together with the father subject to the charms of the river Berounka, but at the same time, also experiencing the harsh wartime reality. "Zlatí úhoři" gained in 1979, the main prize at the international festival Prix Italia.
