It is the third part of what Pasolini called the "trilogy of life" in contrast to that on the death that had in mind (but which was realized only the first segment, Salò). After Boccaccio, and Geoffrey Chaucer, here the director friulano draws on the novella of the east. Pasolini has abolished the common thread of a Thousand and one night, that is, the intervention of the beautiful Sheherazade in the guise of the narrator, but he kept some famous episodes. The flower of the thousand and one nights is perhaps the most prodigal of beautiful images of the films of Pasolini, but it is also the most almanaccato and cold. And then the habit to speak in the dialect of the popular characters, is revealed here as a gimmick to make a colour, devoid of genuine meaning.
